Cor Van Raay and Community Aquatic Centre

Picture Butte, Alberta

The Town of Picture Butte’s original pool was built in 1967 and was in need of replacement. Van Roekel Architecture collaborated with a design builder who worked very closely with the Town of Picture Butte to develop and construct a new pool and change room facility for the community.

The goal was to not only provide a well functioning recreational facility, but also to create a unique design that is both suited to the neighbourhood and also leaves a memorable impression. The exterior of the building utilizes tactile concrete with playful patterns that invite people in. A feature wall with signage and a community inspired artwork will be the centerpiece of the building and create an exciting personal connection to the members of the community. On the interior, large windows and vaulted ceilings provide a welcoming, light reception, staff and lobby area.
